Attendees:

Joyce Simmons, Chapter President
Mark Winegardner, Chapter Vice-President
Jeremiah Fisher, Chapter Treasurer
Elaine Hull, Chapter Secretary
Bruce Bickley

Aaron Chapnick, Student

1. Greetings and Introductions

Joyce Simmons greeted the members of the Executive Committee and called the meeting to order. Aaron Chapnick introduced himself. He was a junior initiate in 2007 and is the Phi Beta Kappa representative to the Council of Honor Societies.

2. Minutes of the August 12th, 2008 Meeting

The minutes of the previous meeting were approved as circulated electronically.

3. Report of the Treasurer, Jerry Fisher

It was suggested that Jerry Fisher send a message to all members requesting that they pay their $35 dues. Mark Winegardner suggested that he look into the possibility of having dues automatically paid by payroll deduction. In addition, we should ask Cara Engel about the funds that were promised to Parmele chapters. Joyce Simmons submitted our annual report on August 15, so the national office has had time to send the funds.

4. Fall 2008 Initiation

A. Date and time: Joyce Simmons read a note from George Weaver, which said that he would receive information from the administration about junior and senior students in early October. He suggested that we hold a meeting to officially elect the new members during the week of the 13th. It was decided to have the meeting Thursday, October 16, at 2 pm, in the Weichelt Lounge, Rovetta Business Building, Room 220. After considerable discussion, it was decided to have the initiation ceremony on Thursday, November 13, at 6 pm, with the students being asked to arrive 15 minutes early to line up and fill in their name cards. The earlier date will avoid the Thanksgiving holiday and also the end-of-semester hecticness. Bruce Bickley will request the use of the Beth Moor Lounge in the Longmire building.

B. Guest speaker: Mark Winegardner has invited Darrin McMahon, from History, to be the speaker for the fall initiation ceremony. However, he has a trip to New York tentatively planned for that date, although that trip may fall through.  He will let Mark know next week. If he is unable to give the fall address, he will definitely give the spring address. His title would be “The History of Happiness.”

C. Information session for invited students: Joyce Simmons suggested that we hold an information session for invited students, perhaps during the week of October 27, to explain the value of PBK membership and to request the addresses of the students’ parents, so that we could mail invitations to their home addresses. However, after the meeting, Joyce suggested that, since we have so many other projects in progress, we wait to plan an information session. Instead, we can rely on students calling other students (see below) and on our Website and perhaps on a new Facebook posting (see below).

D. Assistance by junior-year initiates: Students at the recent pizza lunch agreed that it would be very helpful if they would call invited students and explain the value of PBK. They agreed to organize themselves to divide the list of invited students and call them. In addition, we will ask faculty in each department to call invited students in their departments.

5. Spring 2009 Initiation

Bob Spivey suggested that it may be time to revive the banquet. In previous years this was an enjoyable occasion and might attract potential members. However, we cannot afford to provide a sit-down meal, and adding the cost to the initiation fee might make the fee prohibitively expensive. It was decided to continue having only the reception, which Dean Joe Travis has generously agreed to fund again.

6. PBK Visiting Scholars Series

Mark Winegardner reported that negotiations with Jonathan Ames were almost complete. Ames will be paid $2500, which will cover his airfare and hotel costs, as well as his honorarium. He will arrive Monday evening, January 26, and give a reading from his works at the Warehouse the evening of the 27th at 8 pm. In addition, he will give a talk to PBK students about “how he got where he is” at 4 pm on the 27th. This will provide “added value” for PBK students, beyond the public venue, as requested by the Parmele program. It would be held at a restaurant to be chosen by the students, during Happy Hour. Snacks and beverages could be ordered. Ruby Tuesdays was suggested as a possible venue.

7. PBK Alpha of Florida Website

At the recent pizza lunch James Dickson volunteered to work on our Website. In addition, at the Executive Committee meeting Aaron Chapnick also volunteered to help with it. Mark Winegardner suggested that we have a Facebook posting as well. The two students know each other and could work together, perhaps splitting the $1500 stipend. They should contact Jerry Fisher (JFisher@admin.fsu.edu) to get started.

8. Old Business

Joyce Simmons observed that the Triennial PBK Council will occur later this year. David Darst was our previous representative; she will try to contact him.

9. Adjournment

Meeting was adjourned at 3:30 PM.
